Your Right to Know

Public Records Requests

Under Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act (APRA, Ind. Code § 5-14-3), anyone may inspect and copy the public records of Vigo County government unless a record is confidential by law.

How to request a record

Send your request to the county office that holds the record — identify the record with reasonable particularity (what it is, the date range, the office). A request may be made in person, by phone, or in writing; offices may ask that requests be put in writing.

Where to send common requests

Fees and response times

Offices respond within the timeframes APRA sets (generally 24 business hours for in-person or phone requests and seven days for written requests, either by producing the record or acknowledging the request and stating when it will be available). Copy fees are set by statute and county fee schedule and are quoted before copies are made.

If a request is denied

Denials must cite the statutory basis. You may seek an informal opinion from the Indiana Public Access Counselor (opens in a new tab), who mediates public-records disputes at no cost.
